Indonesian Festival Calendar by Month & Region

Festivals that don't follow the Gregorian calendar fall on a different date every year, so they have their own section instead of a month. Islamic holidays such as Idul Fitri and Idul Adha follow the lunar Hijri calendar and shift about 10–11 days earlier each Gregorian year. Imlek follows the Chinese lunar calendar, Nyepi the Balinese Saka calendar, and Galungan the 210-day Pawukon cycle. Easter is calculated from the lunar cycle, and Waisak from the Buddhist lunar calendar. A few local events, such as Bau Nyale in Lombok and Pasola in Sumba, are timed by elders watching natural signs.

For national holidays, the government announces official public holidays and collective leave (cuti bersama) each year in a joint ministerial decree (SKB 3 Menteri). Exact dates for Islamic holidays can also depend on moon-sighting (rukyat) decisions made close to the day. For regional festivals, the local tourism office or the organiser announces the schedule each year, so check before you plan travel.

Both, depending on the entry. National public holidays are marked "National" or noted directly; many regional and religious ceremonies here are significant culturally without being a nationwide day off.
