Explaining Indonesia, One Verified Story at a Time
IndonesiaExplained.com is a living knowledge base of Indonesian culture — built for the curious, and checked for the careful.
Culture Explained, Not Simplified
Most content about Indonesia online falls into one of two traps: tourist listicles that flatten an entire civilization into "10 fun facts," or academic writing too dense for a first-time reader to actually use. We built this archive to sit in between — accurate enough for a researcher, clear enough for a traveler booking a flight next month.
Every entry is organised under one of seven knowledge pillars — Culture, Traditions, Language, Food, Beliefs, History and Regional Cultures — so a reader can go as deep as they want without ever hitting a dead end.
Four Standards We Don't Compromise On
Accuracy Over Speed
Every claim is checked against academic sources, government references, or verified local tradition before it's published.
Context Over Cliché
We explain the reasoning behind a custom, not just the custom itself — the "why," not only the "what."
Respect Over Spectacle
Traditions are described the way the people who practice them would want them described — never as curiosities.
Depth Over Listicles
Structured pillar-and-cluster articles instead of disconnected "10 facts" posts that go nowhere.
From Research to Publication
Research & Sourcing
Topics are researched against academic references, government cultural resources, and — where possible — verified local oral tradition.
Structured Drafting
Articles follow a consistent framework — direct answer first, then context, regional nuance, and practical guidance — so readers can skim or go deep.
Fact-Checking
Claims are cross-referenced before publishing, and every piece is tagged to its correct pillar so nothing gets miscategorised.
Ongoing Correction
Readers and academics can flag inaccuracies directly — see the correction process on our Contact page.
An Editorial Team, Not a Single Voice
IndonesiaExplained.com is maintained by a small editorial team working with a network of regional contributors across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi and beyond — so no single region's perspective stands in for the whole archipelago.
Editorial Board
Oversees fact-checking, pillar structure and the standards described above. Reachable directly through the Contact page for corrections, research requests, or partnership inquiries.
Found Something to Correct — or Add?
We welcome fact corrections, research requests, and pitches from academics, expats and writers alike.
